ORID Committees are all member created and run. Committees form according to the needs that ORID members identify in our community, and serving on a committee can range from weekly to monthly to quarterly activities. Check out the opportunities below, and if you see a need not addressed, bring it up at the next quarterly membership meeting!

K12

K12 Committee

SCOPE OF WORK:

The K-12 Committee aims to support the work of interpreters in K-12 educational settings. We strive to connect educational interpreters in Oregon with the goal of collaborating, supporting our students and each other, and advancing our skills through professional development and community connections.

TASKS:

  • ELEMENT #1: Act as a resource to interpreters in education

    • Manage the Facebook group for interpreters to ask questions and provide support.

    • Research and document expectations and job descriptions for interpreters as employees in school districts across the state.

    • Create a document/pamphlet for interpreters to use when working with their districts and unions (include descriptions of RID certifications, EIPA testing, comparable pay scales, etc)

  • ELEMENT #2: Stay current on changing trends in the field

    • Develop and provide specialized workshops presented for interpreters in the K-12 setting.

  • ELEMENT #3: Public relations and policy involvement at the local and state levels

    • Maintain connections with organizations having shared interests and goals, and build relationships with unions representing interpreters in education.

    • Be present and involved with local and state policy changes that could impact students and interpreters.

Workshop

Workshop Committee

SCOPE OF WORK:

The workshop committee recruits presenters and hosts workshops on a wide variety of topics for Deaf and hearing interpreter professional development in Oregon.

SCOPE OF WORK:
The ORID communications committee aids in facilitating communication between ORID, ORID members, and community stakeholders.

TASKS:

ELEMENT #1: Manage online communications between ORID board and membership.
Receive E-mails from ORID’s website, answer member questions, and refer members to appropriate contact people.
Design, draft, edit, and disseminate a quarterly ORID newsletter to members.
Write and disseminate monthly E-mail updates to members.
Advertise ORID quarterly meetings.
Contribute to ORID Facebook Page: News and Events.
Monitor, respond to (or prompt appropriate board member), and contribute to ORID Facebook group: Oregon RID.

ELEMENT #2: Develop, Recruit, and Maintain an ORID regional representative program.
Develop responsibilities and reporting structures for ORID regional representatives.
Fill volunteer positions for regional representatives.
Act as a liaison between regional representatives and ORID Board.

ELEMENT #3: Increase visibility of ORID in the community.
Identify areas and carry out marketing actions to increase community awareness and recruit members.
As requested by other the board and committees design fliers, videos, and other promotional items.
Act as an ambassador to ORID, informing members of news and events.

ELEMENT #4: Identify areas for communication improvement.
Investigate, identify, and carry out actions to improve communication between ORID, members, and stakeholders.

Scholarship

Scholarship & Service Committee

SCOPE OF WORK:

To develop, oversee, maintain and promote ORID’s scholarship programs. Additionally, to determine appropriate fundraising, volunteering and service role opportunities for recipients to participate in.

ELEMENT #1: Maintain the operation of current scholarship programs offered to the extent of their expected timelines.

Develop a long-term, sustainable plan and screening process for the 5-year CCHI Exam Scholarship

Fulfill the goals of our NIS Workshop Scholarship.

Continue the operation of our annual NIC/EIPA Performance Exam Scholarship.

ELEMENT #2: Explore and develop fundraising opportunities to sustain ORID’s scholarship programs

Find possible donors/sponsorship for specific funds.

Organize events for fundraising.

Create partnerships with community organizations.

 

ELEMENT #3: Examine the needs of our community and form programs to fund opportunities that will help fill those gaps.

Investigate where our local professionals need support: Benevolent Fund? Hardship Fund? POC-specific scholarship?

 

ELEMENT #4: Establish appropriate acts of service to correspond with the awarded scholarships.

Evaluate needs within the organization, develop a system for tracking and placing award recipien.ts into fitting roles.

Membership

Membership Committee

SCOPE OF WORK:
The ORID membership committee keeps member records, manages membership renewals, and keeps the board informed on membership related issues.

MEMBERS:

TASKS:

ELEMENT #1: Keep membership records updated.
Use ORID’s website to keep all member records current.
Update members’ contact information.
Keep contact information synced between ORID’s website and Constant Contact.

ELEMENT #2: Investigate, develop processes, and carry out functions for membership renewals.
Send E-mail reminders for membership renewals.
Send postcard reminders for membership renewals through mail.
Design and print new membership cards.
Send out membership cards with welcome letters upon renewal of membership.
Recruit new ORID members (especially interpreters from historically underrepresented populations).

ELEMENT #3: Represent Membership at ORID Quarterly Meetings.
Select someone to attend each ORID membership meetings and manage the sign-in table.
Set up greeting table with sign-in sheet, membership applications, and agendas.
Attend the meeting and provide membership reports as needed.

ELEMENT #4: Develop a projected and actual budget.
Create a projected budget for the new fiscal year and submit to the VP, VP@orid.org by June 15.
Keep a Budget of all items including: all duplicating costs for membership applications, letters, paper, envelopes, stamps, membership cards and receipt books.

Legislative

Legislative Committee

SCOPE OF WORK:
The ORID legislative committee gathers and shares with ORID membership information about legislative action that influences the interpreting profession in Oregon, and currently is following membership directive to work with stakeholder groups around the state to pursue licensure for ASL interpreters in Oregon.

ELEMENT #1: Investigate state licensure
Collect data from other states on the implementation and impacts of licensure for signed language interpreters and the Deaf and hard of hearing communities
Review and report on the current licensing structure of other professions in Oregon
Make recommendations to the Board regarding issues of licensure in Oregon


ELEMENT #2: Communicate with stakeholders regarding ORID’s legislative involvement.
Inform the ORID membership of legislative actions and updates
Draft reports and updates for ORID’s biannual newsletter
Send legislative updates to the ORID social media coordinator for posting
Send emails to the full membership when necessary 
Communicate with and solicit feedback from stakeholders regarding ORID’s legislative actions
Conduct surveys, meetings, and townhalls with community members as necessary to solicit input and share progress with community members


ELEMENT #3: Pursue legislative action relevant to ORID’s mission
Stay informed on current legislation and organizational policies that affects the Deaf community and signed language interpreters in Oregon
Determine committees, work groups, and coalitions that may benefit from the expertise of ORID members
Bring relevant legislation and policies to the attention of the board
